MEDIA RELEASE
Monday 23 August 2010
The 2010 Assa Abloy Henley-On-Todd Regatta has been hailed a great success by the Rotary Clubs of Alice Springs organising Board. With over 3500 people clambering through the gates to experience the world famous Regatta, This year has seen another successful regatta came of age with the crossing of the river by a streaker and the celebration of a 30th birthday party in a private marquee.
Competitor numbers were up with 500 taking part in the fun and games. The popular BYO boat entries raced their own boats and included teams from various local business, backpackers, interstaters, communities and sporting clubs. The winners in fine style were the bright and energetic team from CD Pirates. The standard of the BYO boat presentation this year was impressive with a lot of effort and creativeness in the finished results!
Event Commodore Ron Saint from Rotary is delighted with the day. “It was just a fantastic day. The weather was perfect with everyone I spoke to having a fantastic time. We had many people come to the Alice just for the Assa Abloy Henley-On-Todd Regatta” from around Australia and Overseas - even a rower from the Henley-on-Thames compete in our event. The Navy contingent also had a great day out. Chief Petty Officer Tony Thomas said “This has been a great trip for us. We have interacted with the locals and the Henley-On-Todd Regatta has really been a highlight. We really look forward to a continuing association in 2011 for the 50th year of Henley-on-Todd.”
The event finale, The Imparja Battle Boat Spectacular is always a crowd pleaser with the Vikings, Pirates and Navy taking to the high seas in the colourful and exploding finish. The “Vikings” fought gallantly with water bombs and cannon fire against the Navy boat “HMAS Courage” who performed admirably but the crowd favourite was the “Nauteus” as overall winners. The captain of the Naueteus deployed questionable tactics by gaining crowd attention when he proposed to his wench in the middle of the Battle arena prior to the commencement of the Battle.
Ron Saint said “We have to raised some worthy funds for the three local Rotary Clubs in the Alice, and of course monies raised all go back into the Community and worthy Rotary projects. A big thank you to all of the hard working volunteers and particularly our Sponsors for their support. We look forward to a bigger and better year in 2011 for Henley-on-Todd’s 50th year.”
